Introduction
Works to improve and install infrastructure to facilitate the construction of Sizewell C progresses well. We are aiming to reduce disruption as much as possible as the works continue and thank the East Suffolk community for their patience.
The roundabouts on the A12 are nearing completion and the Park and Rides are increasing in capacity. The construction of the Marine Bulk Import Facility (MBIF) to enable materials to be delivered by sea is well underway and will be across the beach by July. Our rail teams are working hard to enable trains to start accessing the temporary construction area, therefore meeting our commitment to bring 60 per cent of materials in by sea and train.
Off Site Infrastructure
Park and Rides:
The Southern and Northern Park and Ride car parks are open and our workforce are using the facilities and being bused onto site, reducing the traffic on the local road network. At the Northern Park and Ride, there are now 280 spaces and eighty spaces at the Southern Park and Ride. We are further increasing capacity throughout May.
Southern Park and Ride (SPR): Works on the A12 at Wickham Market have now been completed, with a new speed restriction in place for 50mph on the Northbound Lane just after the turning to Wickham Market, this includes a new lane merging as traffic heads towards Marlesford. The majority of the works on the slip road heading onto the Northbound A12 at Wickham market are also now complete with commissioning of street lighting to follow. The construction of the Southern Park and Ride will be completed by the Autumn of this year.
Northern Park and Ride (NPR): The works to link the roundabout to the A12, Willow Marsh Lane and the NPR are almost complete. The works have been conducted at night and under traffic management to avoid closing the A12 during the day. The temporary traffic lights at the roundabout will be lifted at the end of the week (Friday 1st May) and traffic flows will improve. The construction of the NPR is expected to finish in Autumn 2026.
Roads:
Friday Street and Yoxford Roundabout:
The completion of the construction phase to Yoxford and Friday Street roundabouts is on schedule for the end of July. Traffic cones and compounds will be removed at Yoxford and the roundabout will be handed over to Suffolk County Council Highways. At Friday Street, traffic management will be significantly reduced, however access to the construction of the two-village bypass for Stratford St Andrews and Farnham will continue. Grass seeding will be sown, ahead of further planting in the Autumn.
Two Village Bypass and Sizewell Link Road
Both the Two Village Bypass and the Sizewell Link Road are now in full construction.
Specifically, works are underway to build the bridges needed to pass over the River Alde on the two village bypass and the East Suffolk railway line on the link road.
To enable the construction of the Sizewell Link Road, road closures are required to facilitate the construction of the road. These include:
Moat Road and George Road, where a new road layout is being constructed. This work is expected to be completed by 7 August 2026. However, Moat Road will remain closed from the B1122.
Littlemore Road remains permanently closed. We will shortly be removing diversion signs from the area to declutter signage.
Abbey Lane re-opening has had slight delay by a week to complete the required improvements works of the road. The reopening will now be from the 6 July.
Pretty Road will also close from 6 July to allow construction of a bridge over the link road.
Fordley Road is also subject to a required closure, we will update in due course on the timings of this.
B1122 We are progressing the new access requirement to the construction site north of Middleton Moor, which we expect to be finished early July. This will require two-way traffic light management on 29 and 30 June in order to complete the works.
A12 Road improvements
Work in Marlesford to improve footways, construct a signalised road crossing, widen road junctions and improve road signage are ongoing. Works will then progress to Little Glemham to construct similar road safety measures and road infrastructure improvements and upgrades.
In and around Leiston
Road improvement works continue around Abbey Road, Lovers Lane and Eastbridge Road. Over the coming month road resurfacing around the rail line will continue.
Work is also continuing along the Bridleway 19 diversion and the plaza roundabout, which will become the main access point to the Sizewell C construction sites once complete. This is expected to be operational in early 2027.
We have completed the first phase of the B1122 road improvements, resurfacing works at Middleton Moor will be carried out in September.
Park and Rides
We continue to gradually increase capacity at both the Northern and Southern Park and Rides as the construction works of both sites continue at pace. We are looking forward to re-opening Willow Marsh Lane in July. Our contractors will move on to A12 road improvements from the station to the Jet garage including resurfacing, a new pedestrian crossing and road markings. This will require night time road closures Monday 20 July – Wednesday 22 July.
Rail
Good progress has been made along the railway corridor. Track has now been laid along the Green Rail Route, track and level crossing has been installed at Abbey Road and Buckleswood Road has also been completed.
Over the coming months, level crossing gates will be installed or upgraded along the Saxmundham to Leiston railway line. Road closures will be required to allow these upgrades to take place.
Important utilities work on the Leiston Level Crossing on Station Road are required to be made in August, specifically upgrades for domestic gas piping. We are working closely with Cadent Gas who will be carrying out these works throughout August and will require a full road closure. Pedestrian crossing will be maintained throughout the works.
Main Construction Area (MCA) including Sizewell Beach
Works on the Marine Bulk Import Facility are progressing from the main development site towards the sea, and we expect to enter the sea in July. As a result, the marshalling system along the beach footpath will be removed. Works will then continue to complete the facility by the end of the year. Sheet piling for the temporary sea defence is also scheduled to be completed by July.
Once this is complete, works will begin in the autumn to install rock armour around the southern end of the temporary sea defence. This work is required to protect Sizewell B operations. To prepare for the installation, rock deliveries will begin in July. The rocks will be transported by road from the Port of Great Yarmouth to the site using our designated route. Further preparation works will also take place on the beach ahead of installation.
Some alterations will be made to the beach footpath to accommodate construction of the rock armour and help ensure the footpath remains open while the works are carried out.
