Green Rail Route

  • Activity: Road closures
  • Start Date: 28th April 2025
  • End Date: 23rd May 2025

From 28th April there will be a number of upcoming temporary closures on Buckleswood Road and on sections of B1119 Saxmundham Road, Saxmundham Road and Buckleswood Lane in the vicinity of the Saxmundham Road level crossing.

The works at Saxmundham Road level crossing will enable further drainage surveys and tree felling to take place ahead of our work to upgrade the railway track and level crossing, whilst the works at Buckleswood Road will allow the installation of the temporary plant crossing in support of the delivery of the Green Rail Route.

We have consulted with Suffolk County Council to agree the proposed traffic management measures and have sought to keep roads open as much as possible to minimise disruption to the community. The works have been co-ordinated with the wider traffic management planned in the area for the project, and have taken into consideration the work on Abbey Road, and Abbey Lane, which is why elements of the work are being undertaken after the completion of the current utility works on Abbey Road.

There will be diversion routes in place and access to property will be maintained during these temporary closures.

How will the Abbey Lane closure affect the diversion routes?

Phase 1: Abbey Lane Temporary Diversion Route (28 April to 2 May)

Abbey Lane is closed with a diversion in place via Saxmundham Road level crossing. However, during the Phase 1 period where works are occurring at Saxmundham Road level crossing (28 April to 2 May) the Abbey Lane diversion route will be temporarily altered during the night-time closure. Outside of the night-time road closure times of 10pm to 6am, Saxmundham Road level crossing will be open to all traffic.

The Abbey Lane diversion route will be altered to Buckleswood Road, Westward Ho, B1122 during this short period due to the night time closure of Abbey Road. It will then revert back to the agreed diversion route via Saxmundham Road level crossing, when the works on this crossing are complete.

Phase 2: Abbey Lane Diversion Route (6 May to 10 May)

The Abbey Lane diversion route will not be affected by Phase 2, and will remain as the currently approved route via Saxmundham Road level crossing.

Phase 3 & 4: Abbey Lane Temporary Diversion Route (19 May to 22 May)

As above, Abbey Lane will be closed with a diversion in place via Saxmundham Road level crossing. However, during the Phase 3 and Phase 4 period where works are occurring at Saxmundham Road level crossing (19 May to 22 May) the Abbey Lane diversion route will be temporarily altered during the night-time closures.

The Abbey Lane diversion route will be altered to Harrow Lane, Moat Road and B1122 during this short period. It will then revert back to the agreed diversion route via Saxmundham Road level crossing, when the works on this crossing are complete.
